I have always marveled at the solar energy concept. I lived in a dormitory while in college that used solar power. I would like to know if there are any Grants or programs that would supply solar energy to single family home owners?

Eddie.

I hope not. Why should I pay for your solar panels?

Any government grants would be from subsidies that we pay as tax payers for big oil, and thus is diverted from there. As far as I know that is still in the works but is right around the corner.
In Colorado, we passed the alternative fuel act, which requires our utilities to get 20% of their energy from renewable sorces. This inturn means that they will give the homeowner a 65% refund on the cost of their system, plus net metering. This means a solar system that cost 24k (on average of 2000kw use per month, would cover your electric needs) will only cost you about 8500$ and at the end of the year, one should expect a net metering check for 300$. But once they achive the 20% the refund is to end, unless voters approve another increase.
I would advise you just call your local utilites or look at your bill and see if you also have that option.

In Australia, there is tons. You get almost 40% off solar panels and 60% off water tanks.

Paying full price for the solar units, you would get your money back in 12 years going by energy bills.
